What’s the deal with feng shui and clutter?

Ask any feng shui practitioner and they’ll tell you the first step to having good feng shui in your home is to get rid of clutter.

Why?

If you guessed that clutter gets in the way of the flow of energy around your home, you would be correct! However, this is not the only reason.

Clutter represents blockages, stagnancy and holding onto the past, and because the different areas of your home reflect the different areas of your life, depending on where the clutter is located you may find that you have difficulty moving forward and being open to new opportunities with regards to relationships, your career, or studies, for example.

Now, I’m sure I’m not the only one here with an ever-expanding wardrobe of clothes still with their tags on, or clothes that I wore once two years ago but won’t ever wear again because for some reason they look absolutely hideous on me now and I can’t imagine how I’d ever left the house wearing them last time.

But let me tell you, stuffing things away in cupboards is definitely not a case of out of sight, out of mind. Because it’s never completely out of mind – just pushed to the back where it creeps forward without you realising and fogs the brain, causes confusion, fuels anxiety and leaves you feeling stressed – and how can anyone move forward in life without a clear head?

I know once I’ve done my bi-yearly wardrobe clean-out its like a massive weight has been lifted off my shoulders and I feel all inspired to redefine my fashion style and make better clothing purchases in the future.

Just think about how good you feel after you’ve thrown out all the old half-eaten, stale packets of biscuits from the pantry and organised everything into tidy, categorised rows. Doesn’t it just make you want to use those lentils you found in the corner behind the packet of cake mix to make that healthy soup recipe you saw pop up in your Facebook news feed the other day?

Clearing out clutter gives you the clarity and readiness you need to progress.

Doing so is the first step to good feng shui and improving your life, as it frees you up and makes you more open to receiving all the good that the universe has to give.
