I consider myself a bit of a makeup junkie.
I spend far too much money trying to find products that will magically make me look like a Kardashian (yes, these ladies are not to everyone’s taste but you can’t deny their makeup is always perfection), and way too much of my free time watching smokey eye tutorials on YouTube.
If you saw the state of my bathroom you’d probably think I have a problem. Either that, or I’ve started my own home business à la Breaking Bad.
I have bottles, vials, eyedroppers and tubes filled with various liquids strewn all over the place (not good feng shui – see why here), and the sink is basically powder coated a shade of warm beige. You’d probably also need a mask and goggles to get through the haze of pink grapefruit, lime and Kakadu plum extract in the air from all the natural perfumes and deodorants I’m testing out (this is my current fave).
Ever since I started replacing my conventional makeup products with natural, non-toxic alternatives, my addiction only seems to be getting worse.
I’m constantly on the hunt for products that live up to what I have been used to, especially base products because as my fellow makeup junkies would know, a perfect party face begins with a flawless base! (I just made that up then :-D)
This has actually proven to be quite a difficult task as I’ve discovered that most natural foundations simply don’t provide the coverage I’m after (I’m not opposed to a bit of cake face on occasion). They all seem to provide little more coverage than a tinted moisturiser or they don’t have the staying power on my combination/oily skin.
However, I have finally found a few natural makeup products that not only live up to my expectations, but are completely non-toxic. I get all of them from Nourished Life, and if you would like 10% off these products, or anything else they stock, use the code SHOP at checkout!
Disclaimer: Please remember that everyone’s skin is different and everyone has their own preferences for what they want to achieve using makeup. These products are simply what I am currently enjoying and what work for me.
My favourite natural makeup base products
Oh lordy! I cannot tell you how happy I am to have found this foundation. It’s definitely the best that I’ve come across so far. It claims to be full coverage but I’d say its more medium-buildable to full, and dries quickly to a matte finish. It’s perfect for my skin type, so if you have dry skin it may be too drying for you. The best part about it is that it’s formulated with fruit and vegetable pigments rather than chemical colourings. The consistency is quite thick and it reminds me a little of Mac Studio Fix Fluid foundation or Covergirl Outlast Stay Fabulous foundation.
Yep, this product is a 10/10 from me. A complete lifesaver in Summer when my makeup wants to use my face as a slippery slide to my chin. Although quite thick, it spreads out easily and is extremely lightweight on the skin. It does a fantastic job of mattifying and keeps my foundation put all day! It even contains seaweed collagen to plump your skin and who wouldn’t want that! I’d say its almost a dupe for the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer and works just as well.
This primer is fabulous in Winter for me as it’s moisturising and has a pearlescent sheen to it. If you have dry skin you could probably make the 100% Pure foundation work for you by using this underneath to hydrate your skin and give your base a dewy finish. Sometimes I even like to mix this primer with the 100% pure Mattifying Primer when I want my makeup to have a bit of a glow. Think of it as a more moisturising version of the Revlon Photoready Skinlights Illuminator.
For me, no base is ever complete without a dusting of powder to set it in place, and this compact takes the cake. It’s not too heavy nor too light, and gives a nice matte finish over foundation as well as a bit of extra coverage. It’s made of rice powder and gets its colour from fruit and vegetable pigments. I actually have a lighter shade that I use to set my foundation as well as a darker shade that I find works well as a soft contour powder. You’ll find that the texture is not quite as silky as conventional pressed powders, but this is because there are no silicones in it, which is a good thing!
If you don’t want any extra coverage and prefer a translucent setting powder, you can’t go past this one. I love that this product is made up of only three natural minerals and doesn’t contain any unnecessary ingredients. It’s a loose, white powder, which dusts on lightly, resulting in a transparent, matte finish. Although I always use it on top of my makeup, apparently it can be even used to prime the skin prior to makeup application by absorbing oil and smoothing pores!
And there you have it. My favourite natural makeup products for a flawless base. But, makeup junkie friends, you may have noticed something missing.
That’s right. A flawless base without concealer??
Unfortunately, I just haven’t been able to find a natural concealer that has enough coverage and doesn’t melt off or crease after an hour. If you’ve found one you must tell me what it is right now! Pretty please and thank you.
