As we move away from Autumn and inch closer to Winter, if you’re anything like me, the thought of rugging up in cozy Winter wear and not having to shave your legs as often might be getting you excited (hubby though, not so much).
However, you may not be looking forward to the dry, scaly skin that usually comes along with the cooler weather. So while you’re getting ready to whip out your beanies, boots and scarves (or if you’re here in Brisbane, maybe just some socks to go with your thongs), you might like to whip up some natural, nourishing body butter as well!
The best thing about this DIY natural whipped body butter is that there are only three ingredients so you know exactly what you’re putting onto your skin and you can even choose to make them all organic, which is what I did.
Compare this to the 20 or more different toxic ingredients that you’d typically find in a conventional body moisturiser, including mineral oils, parabens, siloxanes, synthetic fragrances, formaldehyde and phthalates. Studies have shown these chemicals to be skin and respiratory irritants, endocrine disrupters and even carcinogens.
On top of this, most of the time when you purchase a conventional moisturiser you’re paying for water, which is more often than not the main ingredient. Because this DIY natural whipped body butter contains no water, it will not go mouldy so no nasty preservatives are needed.
Not only is this DIY natural whipped body butter deliciously good for your skin, it’s so soft and fluffy that it almost looks delicious enough to eat! A couple times there I caught myself about to lick my fingers and had to keep telling myself it wasn’t a pavlova mixture.
Here’s the recipe.
DIY natural whipped body butter
- 1/2 cup of organic shea butter
- 1/4 cup of organic, extra-virgin coconut oil
- 1/4 cup of organic sweet almond oil
- (optional) 12-15 drops of essential oil. I used lavender
- Melt all the ingredients together in a saucepan over a low heat until it turns into a clear liquid. Place into the fridge to cool until it turns opaque and solidifies slightly. Do not let it harden completely.
- Using an electric mixer or beater, whisk for a few minutes until the mixture turns a glossy white and stiff peaks form. Smooth onto a baking sheet and place into the oven at a low temperature to bake for an hour. NO. Not that last part. That’s pavlova.
- Spoon whipped mixture into a jar or slather straight onto your body!
This body butter will not melt and does not need to be stored in the fridge.
Note: If the mixture doesn’t seem to be whipping up into stiff peaks, it probably didn’t have enough time in the fridge to cool. You can place it back in to harden some more and try again.
There are so many different variations of this recipe on the internet using different types of oils, so I just used what I already had at home. The only thing you need to remember is that it must contain the ratios of 75% solid oil (coconut oil counts as a solid oil) and 25% liquid oil in order to whip up nicely and retain the air.
